School Lunches
Ka Ora, Ka Ako | Healthy School Lunches Programme
Upokongaro School is part of the Ka Ora, Ka Ako | Healthy School Lunches Programme, which provides access to nutritious lunches and aims to improve the health and wellbeing of our school community. Addressing food insecurity creates a supportive learning environment and reduces barriers to education (NELP: Objective 1, Priority 1; Objective 2, Priority 3).
We contract to an external supplier to provide our lunches every day. We follow all food safety guidelines, and provide a nutritious menu that caters for all of our students.
Our contracted suppliers have registered food safety plans, and our staff and volunteers are trained in the storage and food handling requirements of the delivered lunches. We regularly monitor training and compliance.
We have a plan for the safe distribution of surplus lunches that takes into account the suitability of lunch items for distribution, and safe handling and storage of surplus food. We share information with our school community about keeping food safe.
Our school manages the day-to-day relationship with our supplier and we can adapt menus and raise quality issues based on feedback from our school community. The Ministry of Education holds the contract with our supplier and can also monitor the quality of the food and service.
Meals are chosen in bulk by the school in advance.
